👩⚕️ Scanning & Imaging Tips: Gallbladder
The gallbladder and biliary tract examination starts with the patient in a supine position. It is widely recommended to scan the gallbladder and biliary tract in two different body positions. Ask the patient to take a deep breath, which lowers the gallbladder from underneath the costal margin. Concurrently, asking the patient to raise their anatomic right elbow over their head will improve your image window. If these interventions do not provide adequate views, rotate the patient into a left lateral decubitus position. This position may displace bowel gas loops out of the way and move the gallbladder inferiorly.¹
