SonoSim Launches Multi-Factor Authentication

At SonoSim, we are committed to maintaining security of our systems for our users. Therefore, we have began offering multi-factor authentication (MFA).

At SonoSim, safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of our users' information is a top priority. With the increasing number of cyber threats in today's digital world, enhancing security is not just a technological requirement but a commitment to our community of healthcare professionals and educators. As we continue to innovate in the field of medical education technology, your digital safety remains at the forefront of our efforts. By consistently updating our security protocols, we strive to offer you a platform where you can focus on learning, unburdened by security concerns. Therefore, effective June 28, 2023, we will be taking our commitment to your digital safety a step further by introducing multi-factor authentication (MFA) as an added measure to further secure your account. While this feature is optional, it comes highly recommended as a best practice in the realm of digital security.

Overview

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a cutting-edge security feature designed to make it significantly harder for unauthorized users to gain access to your account. When MFA is enabled, the login process becomes a two-step verification. Not only will you need to input your username and password, but you will also be prompted to enter a one-time code that will be sent to you via an authenticator app of your choice.

How to Enable MFA

Setting up MFA is a straightforward process that takes only a few minutes but provides long-lasting security benefits. The initiative aims to further safeguard your educational materials, personal information, and the sensitive data of your students or healthcare institution. With the introduction of MFA, we aim to provide our users with peace of mind, knowing that their accounts have an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access. Keep an eye out for forthcoming details on how to enable MFA on your account.

By integrating MFA, we are reiterating our steadfast dedication to the safety and well-being of our SonoSim community. Thank you for entrusting us with your ultrasound educational needs.

FAQs

What is an authenticator app?

An authenticator app is a mobile application that generates a six- to eight-digit security code that is active for a short period of time, usually 30 seconds. If MFA is enabled on your account, this code will be required during login after entering your username and password.

You can download any authenticator app of your choice from either the App Store or Google Play Store, depending on your mobile device. Some recommended apps include Google Authenticator (iOS | Android) and Duo Mobile (iOS | Android).

Will I need my authenticator app on all SonoSim login screens (i.e., SonoSimulator, My SonoSim Dashboard, and Mobile App)?

If you’ve enabled MFA, you will need your authenticator app to log into My SonoSim Dashboard and the SonoSim Mobile App.

Currently, the SonoSimulator will not ask for an MFA code (even when MFA is enabled on the web), so you will not need your authenticator app to access the SonoSimulator.

Can I use email or text message (SMS) to authenticate instead?

Using an authenticator app is our primary MFA method. However, if you do not have access to your authenticator app during login, there is an option to have a one-time code sent to the email associated with your SonoSim account.

Text message authentication is not currently available.

What if I don't have access to my authenticator app when I'm trying to log in?

If you do not have access to your authenticator app during login, there is an option to have a one-time code sent to the email associated with your SonoSim account.

If accessing your email isn’t an option, you can use the recovery code MFA option. When setting up MFA, you’ll be provided with a recovery code; this is a longer static code that can be used instead of the dynamically generated authenticator app code. Please save this recovery code in a safe place in case you lose access to your authenticator app. If you use your recovery code, you’ll be provided with a new one for next time.

If you need additional assistance, please contact support@sonosim.com

Can I turn on MFA on behalf of my learners?

Currently, each individual user must manually enable MFA on their own. However, within the Manage Users table, there is a column where admins can view which learners have MFA enabled.

Can I turn off MFA?

Yes! If you decide you no longer want to use MFA, you can disable it by going to My Account (under Manage in the left sidebar), then clicking on the Security. You’ll see a Disable button under the MFA section.

You can always later re-enable MFA by following the same initial MFA activation steps.
