🗞️ Ultrasound Application News
A recent study found cranial ultrasound to be 100% sensitive and over 90% specific for detecting intracranial hemorrhage in preterm neonates. These findings highlight ultrasound’s potential as a safe, bedside alternative to MRI for intracranial hemorrhage detection in pre-term newborns. Explore the full blog post and what the study means for neonatal care.

What are the relevant sonographic findings?
Background: This 42-year-old male presents complaining of rapid onset of a dark shade over part of his visual field in the left eye. He experienced light flashes in his eye preceding the dark shade.
👩⚕️ Scanning & Imaging Tips: Foreign Body Localization
Foreign bodies can be challenging to identify and remove. Usually, physicians turn to plain radiographs to screen for retained foreign bodies in patients who come in with concerns of soft-tissue foreign bodies.
Unfortunately, this is often unproductive since a lot of times it’s a wooden foreign body that is causing the swelling and wood does not show up very well, if at all, with plain radiography.

While metallic and glass foreign bodies can be identified on plane radiography, ultrasound is actually much more useful in helping identify and remove them at the bedside. Even a two-view plain radiograph, can be very misleading with respect to where to actually search for the foreign body. One is often misled by looking at the external site of skin penetration, which may not be anywhere near where the foreign body is actually located.
CT and MRI are alternatives, but they come with drawbacks such as cost, limited availability, radiation exposure (CT), and contraindications (MRI). These modalities are much less helpful with the removal of the foreign body under real-time image guidance.
Ultrasound offers a safe, real-time, and cost-effective solution for guided removal.
