August 2026 - Emerging Ultrasound Applications

Explore the August 2026 SonoSim Wave: GLP-1 labeling changes, gastric scanning positioning, endotracheal tube confirmation, and new QuestionBank cases.

🗞️ Ultrasound Application News

FDA labeling for GLP-1 receptor agonists now reflects reports of pulmonary aspiration in patients who fasted before elective procedures. New multisociety guidance responds by pointing to point-of-care gastric ultrasound for day-of confirmation rather than blanket medication holds. Our latest post breaks down what changed, why delayed gastric emptying drives the risk, and the specific scanning skills clinicians need to assess it.

👩‍⚕️ Scanning & Imaging Tips: Gastric Scanning

Imaging-Tips_Aug_2026

Gastric contents naturally pool in a gravity-dependent manner and will maximally collect in the gastric antrum and body when positioned in the right lateral decubitus. As such, placing the patient in a right lateral decubitus position is the most widely recommended approach. Placing the patient in a semi-upright, or a combination of both right lateral decubitus and semi-upright positions, have been described as methods to maximize distention and visualization of the gastric antrum. Gas tends to migrate away from these gravity-dependent locations and moves towards the gastric fundus, which aids in better visualization of the gastric antrum over time. Frequent peristaltic contractions are commonly observed in the gastric antrum and pylorus, especially when the stomach is full. There are no absolute contraindications to performing gastric ultrasound. However, relative contraindications may include soft-tissue conditions that would preclude transducer placement over the upper abdomen and conditions that might prevent required body positioning.

💡 SonoSim Tips & Tricks

Freeze. Find. Annotate. Save.

Most learners freeze and save whatever is on the screen. A better image is waiting, and it takes seconds to find.

  1. Freeze the image. You can also just tap the F key.
  2. Use the on-screen arrows to move back through your frames. You start at frame 20, the most recent. You can go back through all 20.
  3. Stop on the frame that shows the anatomy best.
  4. Annotate and save it.
