🗞️ Ultrasound Application News

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is transforming emergency and critical care medicine, providing life-saving insights when traditional ultrasound methods fall short. A recent study highlights TEE’s impact, influencing management decisions in up to 85% of undifferentiated shock cases. As adoption grows, structured training is essential. Explore how TEE is shaping the future of emergency ultrasound in our new blog post.

📚 Case Study:  Aortic Arch

What are the relevant sonographic findings?

Background:

  • 79-year-old female
  • Presents with severe sharp substernal chest pain
  • Patient is in severe distress and is unable to provide additional history
  • Patient not cooperating enough to enable vital sign assessment

👩‍⚕️ Scanning & Imaging Tips: Apical Three Chamber View for LVOT Measurements

The apical three-chamber view, also known as the apical long-axis view, provides a similar visualization of cardiac structures as the parasternal long-axis view but from an apical position. A key advantage of this approach for LVOT evaluation is the alignment of the ultrasound beam with blood flow, ensuring a more parallel orientation. This parallel positioning enhances the accuracy of Doppler-derived blood-flow measurements through the LVOT, reducing angle-related errors and improving hemodynamic assessment.

🧠 Challenge Case of the Month: Cardiac

Case History:  This 74-year-old male with a history of cardiomyopathy and pacemaker is brought in following a respiratory arrest. Severe cardiogenic pulmonary edema is suspected based upon lung ultrasound and clinical findings. The patient's airway and breathing are stabilized. He undergoes a resuscitative TEE exam to identify the etiology of his clinical decompensation.
