May 2026 - Critical Care Connection

Critical care ultrasound insights for clinicians: blended learning research, LV compression imaging, resuscitative TEE training, and CCEeXAM 2027 prep.

🗞️ Ultrasound Application News

A recent study published by BMC Medical Education found that a blended learning curriculum for bedside ultrasound training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowships performs just as well as traditional in-person instruction, while saving over 15 faculty hours. Fellows showed significant gains in both knowledge and hands-on skills, with results holding strong at the six-month mark.

👩‍⚕️ Scanning & Imaging Tips: Visualizing Left Ventricle Compression

May2026-Tips-and-Tricks3

During CPR, the mid-esophageal long-axis view provides an excellent position to assess the quality of chest compressions and identify opportunities for improvement. The accompanying series of images demonstrates the physiologic effects on aortic outflow of optimal hand positioning. Image A demonstrates ventricular filling and an open mitral valve during the “decompression” phase of chest compressions. Image B demonstrates effective compression of the left ventricle with an unobstructed LVOT. Image C demonstrates an open aortic valve and widely patent LVOT and aortic root.

CCEeXAM® Heads-Up

Mark your calendars. Registration for the January 2027 CCEeXAM® is expected to open in June, giving you a solid runway to get ahead of it now.

The Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM®) is administered by the National Board of Echocardiography and is offered just once a year. It's a 200-item computer-based exam designed for licensed physicians performing critical care echocardiography, and it was developed through a multispecialty collaboration that includes CHEST, ATS, SCCM, ACEP, and ASE. Passing earns Testamur status, the first step toward full NBE Certification.

SonoSim's CCEeXAM Test Prep includes 2,900+ peer-reviewed questions, unlimited timed mock exams, and content mapped directly to the official exam outline.
